Nowadays, it has 2 major schools of thought – the American D.O.s, which are Osteopathic Physicians, are almost identical to M.D.s and take the same time and amount of education and have the same rights. European D.O.s are dedicated manual therapists that function more closely to a chiro or physiotherapist.
Those without the American D.O. designation are not physicians and in Canada are referred to as Osteopathic Manual Therapists to help delineate between the two.
An Osteopathic Manual Therapist helps deal with musculoskeletal issues and movement dysfunction, helping reduce pain through gentle movement techniques combined with gentle resistance provided by the patient.

In addition to this, I use visceral manipulation (abdominal content manipulation), corrective exercise, along with education in pain science to help patients understand their chronic pain, manage their pain, and to create strategies to help deal with that pain.

I also use a light touch therapy called Cranial/Sacral Therapy, this helps to increase communication between the brain and body. Which in turn helps to stimulate the self healing mechanisms of the body, thus allowing injuries to heal faster.
